We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Custodian to join our team and help keep our facilities clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone who steps through our doors. As a Custodian, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of our facilities, ensuring that all areas are spotless and well-maintained. You’ll be part of a close-knit team that values collaboration and takes pride in their work. The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented individual with a genuine passion for cleanliness and maintenance. You will work in a cooperative atmosphere where your contributions are acknowledged and valued. This position has a residency requirement to live within 35 miles of Madison, South Dakota.

At East River Electric Power Cooperative we're dedicated to providing reliable and affordable wholesale power to our members across 40,000 square miles of service area. As a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative, we provide electricity to 24 rural electric distribution cooperatives and one municipally-owned electric system serving eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. Our members, in turn, power the lives of the member-owners in their service territories.

What You'll Accomplish

You'll work alongside passionate professionals who embody the cooperative values of integrity, accountability, innovation, and commitment to community. We believe in investing in your growth and development, which is why we offer paid training and development opportunities to enhance your skills and advance your career. In this position you will:

  • Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of facilities, including restrooms, office spaces, and common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors to maintain a clean workspace.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins regularly to support a hygienic environment.
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, and equipment to promote cleanliness and reduce allergens.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, steps, parking lots and other outdoor areas by using a shovel and gas-powered equipment.
  • Maintain outside grounds such as flower gardens, planters, lawns, and landscaped areas.
  • Ensure facility security and respond to building system alarms, even during irregular hours.
  • Keep all cleaning supplies and equipment adequately stocked and in good condition.
  • Perform minor building maintenance such as painting, replacing light bulbs, patching loose tiles, replacing door handles, etc.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of custodial closets and storage areas.
  • Assist with set-up and take-down for events and meetings, ensuring all areas are tidy and ready for use.
  • Participate in and contribute to our safety culture.

Showcase Your Knowledge, Abilities, and Expertise. Do you have?

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of previous custodial experience and knowledge of cleaning methods, preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with cleaning chemicals and supplies, as well as safety protocols related to their use
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb steps and ladders, and stand-walk throughout entire shift
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • A commitment to customer service and a helpful attitude towards others
  • Experience and proficiency in using a computer, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Valid driver’s license
