    Job Title: Collections Coordinator
    Location: Lake County Museum, Madison, South Dakota
    Reports To: Executive Director
    Position Type: 15 hours per week

    Position Summary:
    The Collections Coordinator supports the care, documentation, and management of the museum’s collection. This role involves assisting with the cataloging, preservation, and storage of three-dimensional and archival objects, conducting research, and facilitating access to the collection for staff and the public. The assistant will collaborate with the Executive Director and other museum staff to ensure the museum’s collection is well-maintained, properly stored, and accessible for exhibitions, research, and programming.
    Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in cataloging and inventorying the museum’s collection using the museum’s collections management software, Past Perfect.
    • Conduct condition reporting, labeling, and photographing objects as part of the documentation process.
    • Ensure proper storage of objects, maintaining environmental conditions to preserve the collection.
    • Update and maintain records for the museum's collection, including digital and physical files.
    • Assist with object movement and preparation for exhibits, loans, and research requests.
    • Support research initiatives on artifacts to enhance the museum’s interpretive materials, exhibits, and programs.
    • Assist in the care and maintenance of the museum’s archival collections, including papers, photographs, and historical documents.
    • Respond to staff and public inquiries regarding the collection.
    • Follow established museum standards for handling and preserving objects and materials.
    • Participate in occasional collection-related outreach or educational programs.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support the museum’s collections care and management.
    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, or a related field preferred.
    • Prior experience working in a museum or with collections management is desirable.
    • Familiarity with collections management software such as Past Perfect Web addition and cataloging standards.
    • Knowledge of preservation techniques for various materials, including textiles, paper, metal, and wood.
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a small museum setting.
    • Ability to lift and move objects up to 40 lbs.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    Preferred Skills:
    • Experience with object photography and digital asset management.
    • Basic knowledge of artifact conservation practices.
    • Strong research skills, especially in historical or archaeological contexts.
    Working Conditions:
    • This role involves physical tasks such as lifting, climbing ladders, and moving artifacts.
    • May require occasional weekend or evening hours for special events or programs.
     
    • Pay: $14.00 per hour
