The Manufacturing Engineer-I position is responsible for the performance and optimization of Life Floor’s product manufacturing processes and for leading key Engineering projects. This position supports new product development,  product performance enhancement, and drives operational excellence through the use of data-based analysis and project management processes. The Manufacturing Engineer-I ensures updated and proper documentation and operates under the appropriate control systems.  This position promotes  a culture of continuous improvement and cross-company collaboration.

  • Improves Line Safety, Capability, and Optimization of Deployed Capital  

    • Manages safety and automation upgrade projects with the Manufacturing partner.

    • Conducts process/equipment reliability assessments and implements risk mitigation. 

    • Completes capability studies on current processes and reviews against current specifications and tolerances.

    • Implements data capture strategies to monitor and enhance process capabilities.

    • Assesses and recommends next-generation capital equipment and process enhancements.

    • Identifies and improves product consistency through the constant evaluation of current state of environmental, technological, or process capability implications.

  • Improves Life Floor economics and product quality through improved scrap rates, specific cost reduction projects, and improved processing efficiencies.  

    • Develops a cost-reduction roadmap and implements specific projects with defined deliverables.

    • Optimizes process layout and material flows to maximize machine utilization (OEE).

    • Minimizes the amount of product to the landfill through scrap reduction projects. 

    • Optimizes the material and workcenter efficiencies of the product mix as new SKUs are added. 

    • Assesses and improves manufacturing process capabilities by applying lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other data driven tools. 

  • New Product and Feature Development 

    • Leads non-formulary product and/or feature enhancement projects.

    • Works with Process Engineering to implement product characterization hardware and systems for data capture. 

    • Works with Process Engineering to fully characterize products and lock in specifications. 

    • Supports packaging engineering and and/or logistics requirements. 

    • Supports product testing for field performance including fall height.   

    • Works with Installation Services to define new onsite test/assessment  methods to determine remaining product life.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Values and culture fit

  • Minimum 5 years experience as a Manufacturing Engineer involved in product life cycle activities

  • Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering or related technical discipline

  • Solid knowledge of EVA, compression molding and foam converting processes is a plus

  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacturing of goods

  • Demonstrated product development including requirements verification, manufacturing validation, and performance validation; using project management tools

  • Demonstrated performance managing products in a manufacturing environment

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

  • Knowledge and experience using statistical methods

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

  • Experience with google office suite

  • Easily adaptable to many technological systems (messaging, cloud-sharing)

  • Willingness to jump in and get the work done while keeping a positive attitude.

  • Ability to travel approximately 20-30%

  • This position is located in Madison, South Dakota.

  • Travel is expected at less than 10% of the time.

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment including running and troubleshooting processes. .

  • General lab environment in which this position includes periods of computer work.

  • The ability to lift a 50 lbs box of tile is preferred.
